Google Privacy Germany – The data protection office in the northern city of Hamburg said it had slapped the US Internet giant with a 145,000-euro ($189,000) penalty for privacy violations on what it called a nearly unprecedented scale.

It found that while specially equipped Google vehicles took city snapshots between 2008 and 2010 for its Street View function, which supplements its standard map service, they had also picked up data from unsecured wireless networks.

“Among the information gathered in the drive-bys were significant amounts of personal data of varying quality. For example emails, passwords, photos and chat protocols were collected,” the Hamburg authorities said in a statement.

“In my opinion this case constitutes one of the biggest known data protection violations in history,” said the office’s chief, Johannes Caspar.

The company, which cooperated with the probe, was also ordered to delete the data immediately.

Caspar complained that under German law his office was not able to impose a more painful penalty on a major multinational company, noting that the maximum fine for an accidental violation was 150,000 euros.

Hamburg prosecutors had abandoned a criminal case against Google in November, when the data protection office picked it up as an administrative offence.

It found that the company had inadvertently assembled the data, but noted this constituted “a significant lapse of Google’s internal control mechanisms”.

Google said it had made a “mistake” in which the Street View vehicles had picked up “snippets of information” that were essentially useless and were never examined.

The company added that it had already expunged the data.

Authorities in Germany, where privacy concerns are particularly sharp due to gross violations under the Nazi and communist dictatorships, had already imposed restrictions on Google after a protracted dispute over Street View.

Frozen pizza recall, A New York snack food maker now says it is recalling 10 million pounds of frozen pizza, mozzarella bites, Philly cheese steaks and other products linked to a rare and potentially dangerous outbreak of E. coli poisoning. Rich Products Corp. of Buffalo, N.Y., is pulling all products manufactured at its Waycross, Ga., plant. The snacks have best buy dates from Jan. 1 2013 through Sept. 29, 2014, according to a press release.

The company spokesman originally said three million pounds of the products were recalled, but later confirmed that the company also had control of seven million pounds of the frozen items that had not reached stores.
The foods may be contaminated with the bacterium E. coli O121, which already has sickened 24 people in 15 states who ate certain Farm Rich and Market Day frozen chicken quesadillas, pizza slices and other snack foods. Seven people have been hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

However, many more people may have been made ill by the products without knowing it because of complexities involved in identifying E. coli O121, a strain that can be just as dangerous as the better-known E. coli O157:H7 frequently tied to outbreaks caused by hamburger.

The Thursday announcement expands a March 28 recall of 196,222 pounds of Farm Rich brand frozen chicken quesadillas and other frozen mini meals and snack items because they could be contaminated with E. coli O121.

The strain is among a potentially lethal group of bacteria known as Shiga-toxin producing E. coli or STECs. The bacteria, which include E. coli O157, create poisons that can lead to severe illness and disease, including bloody diarrhea, kidney failure and death.

In 2011, U.S. Department of Agriculture officials banned E. coli O121 and five other strains — known as “the big six” — from the nation’s beef supply. This outbreak is the first time Food Safety and Inspection Service officials have recalled products potentially tainted with E. coli O121.

The bacteria are tough to identify in outbreaks because clinical laboratories typically test only for the E. coli O157 strains. To detect the other strains, labs must screen for the presence of Shiga toxins and then send positive samples to public health laboratories to find any non-E. coli O157 STECs.

The strain involved in this outbreak is so rare, its genetic fingerprint has been seen less than 30 times in PulseNet, the CDC’s network of laboratories that track bacteria involved in foodborne illness.

The New York state Department of Health identified the outbreak strain of E. coli O121 in an opened package of Farm Rich brand frozen mini chicken and cheese quesadillas from an ill person’s home, the CDC said.

One of the initiatives that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation bankrolls is the Grand Challenges on Global Health, a series of grants in which the foundation lays out its aims for a project and offers funds for any group that can best meet the criteria.

One of the projects listed on the group’s website Tuesday calls for submissions to “develop the next generation of condom.”

The foundation is offering $100,000 in grant money to fund any group that can come up with a prototype “that significantly preserves or enhances pleasure, in order to improve uptake and regular use.”

Condoms have been around for more than 400 years, but have had the same basic design without any major changes for much of the past 50 years.

As it stands, less than one in seven humans on earth currently use a condom for sexual activity. The Gates foundation says a “lack of perceived incentive for consistent use” is holding back wider adoption.

So they’re pledging money to bankroll any design that manages to combat the general stigma against condoms — that they decrease sexual pleasure — in favour of a version that is neutral or even improves it, without sacrificing condoms’ disease and pregnancy-fighting properties.

The plan sounds like it’s light-hearted, but the Gates foundation is serious. Condoms are one of the best weapons in the arsenal of medical experts to fight sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, HIV and others that kill tens of millions of people every year. Currently, more than 15 billion condoms are produced per year, and they’re used by 750 million men worldwide.

The Gates foundation says any winning ideas that secure phase I funding of $100,000 US may be eligible for an additional $1 million in phase II if early results are promising.

Katy Perry Demands No Carnations, The Smoking Gun website has gotten hold of Katy Perry’s tour rider, the list of backstage requirements — some say demands — that an artist makes when they hit the road. Katy’s is pretty specific, not so much when it comes to food, but when it comes to flowers, of all things.

The rider states that in her dressing room, Katy must have “white and purple hydrangeas, pink & white roses and peonies.” If those flowers are not available, the rider says that Katy will accept a “selection of seasonal white flowers, to include white orchids.” But there’s one particular blossom promoters are forbidden to put in the dressing room — the rider says, “ABSOLUTELY NO CARNATIONS,” all caps, underlined. In addition, Katy specifies that her dressing room must be draped in cream or soft pink, and furnished with “French ornate style” floor lamps, a refrigerator with a glass door and “two cream-colored egg chairs, one of which should have a footstool.”

When it comes to her hotel, Katy insists on a presidential suite in a five-star hotel, with free breakfast and Internet. One entire page of the rider is dedicated to instructions for her driver, including the fact that he or she isn’t to “start a conversation with” or “talk” to Katy, nor “stare at” her in “the backseat through the rearview mirror.” And, of course, no asking for pictures or autographs. The rider also specifies that the driver’s side window must always be “halfway down” at each pickup and drop-off.
